2023 AFCON: Guinea Bissau Dash Nigeria's Automatic Qualification Hopes At Home

In a crucial match for Nigeria’s qualification for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja. 🏟️
The loss leaves Nigeria 🇳🇬 with a daunting task of securing a win in the reverse leg against Guinea-Bissau 🇬🇼 if they want to remain in contention for automatic qualification as one of the two teams from Group A.
Despite starting well and creating some chances, Nigeria 🇳🇬 failed to convert them, and Guinea-Bissau 🇬🇼 gradually took control of the game.
Mama Balde scored the winning goal for the visitors in the 29th minute, and Nigeria could not find an equalizer despite some late chances.
The Eagles came out more purposeful in the 56th minute and almost drew level but Moses Simon could not direct Chukwueze’s low cross to goal.
In the 61st minute Osimhen collected the ball and hit a shot which the keeper held well.
With 13 minutes left Osimhen missed the target off a Simon cross.
The defeat puts Nigeria’s 🇳🇬 qualification hopes in jeopardy and underscores the need for a better performance in the remaining qualifying matches.
